Operation Stop the Swelling and Bleeding

You have had a dental procedure in the past week, and have not completely recovered. You go to bed at night with a slight pain in your gums, but do not think anything of it. Then, you are awoken in the middle of the night to unbearable pain. You go to the bathroom and see that your gums have swollen and you are continually bleeding.

This is an example of one common dental emergency. When a patient experiences painful swelling and bleeding of the gums but must wait a few hours before seeing a professional dentist, there are a number of things they can do while waiting, including the following process:

Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater.

Once you have done that, put either a tea bag or gauze on the bleeding area for about 20 minutes. This should help to control the bleeding.

Hold an ice pack to your cheek near the area where there is swelling. This should help the swelling go down, and alleviate some pain.

If the bleeding continues and it is not possible to see a dentist due to office hours, go to the emergency room.

A Terrible Toothache

A toothache can be one of the most irritating things to deal with, but is one of the most common dental emergencies patients will face. These toothaches can be caused by a number of things, including an abscess, infection, etc. If you are facing a toothache emergency, there are a few things you can do before going to the dentist to help alleviate pain. This includes:

Rinse your mouth with warm water.

Use dental floss to loosen any food or debris that can be stuck.

If you take any over-the-counter medication like aspirin, make sure not to put them against the gums near the toothache. This can burn your gum tissue.

For Patients With a Tooth Infection and Abscessed Gums

A tooth infection and abscessed gums are usually characterized by swelling, pus, and pain. If you notice the beginnings of a tooth infection or abscess, time is of the essence. This infection can damage parts of your teeth and gums, and even spread to other parts of your body. To ease the pain, dentists recommend that patients with this dental issue try to draw the pus towards the surface of the gums and rinse with a warm saltwater solution.
