The temporomandibular joint, or “TMJ” is the joint which connects your lower jaw to your skull. When this joint becomes stressed, misaligned or injured, it leads to the development of a TMJ disorder. This may occur due to a number of factors, including stress, teeth grinding and clenching, arthritis, or trauma and injury to the head, neck or jaw. TMJ disorders have a significant impact on your quality of life, affecting your ability to eat, yawn, speak and perform many other daily actions as well as causing pain and discomfort.

Some common signs of a TMJ disorder include:

  • Clicking or popping sounds when moving your jaw
  • Grinding sounds or sensations in the jaw
  • An inability to open your mouth wide to speak, yawn or chew
  • Locked or stuck jaw
  • Pain when moving the jaw, especially when chewing or biting
  • Frequent headaches, especially when waking
  • Pain in your neck, shoulders and ears

When you visit our office, our dentist will perform a thorough examination to determine the cause of your TMJ disorder. Once we know the cause, we will be able to develop a personalized treatment plan to relieve your discomfort, restore your oral function and improve your quality of life. The treatment or combination of treatments we recommend will depend on the cause and severity of your condition. Some of the options we may recommend include relaxation exercises for your jaw and facial muscles, lifestyle changes, oral appliances such as a night guard, restorative dental treatments, or (in a more extreme case) jaw surgery.

We invite you to contact our office today to schedule your consultation with our dentist. We are committed to helping you regain a healthy mouth and smile.
